What is the ideal weight of your child's bike?

A good tool is essential for learning well! We have designed our BEMOOVs down to the smallest detail to increase your child's pleasure and progress. For this, we have favored the ergonomics and the weight of the bike.

The weight of the bike should never exceed 30% of the child's weight. The most important thing is that the child is able to handle his bike, get off and get back on easily so that he feels comfortable and safe. To give a bad example, most 14-inch bikes on the market weigh around 9 kilos, which is almost half the average weight of a child of riding age. For an 80 kilo adult, it would be like using a 40 kilo bike, a real punishment!

What about the weight of BEMOOV bikes?

At BEMOOV, if we take the example of the 14-inch bike, the weight is 5.7 kilos, or 35% less than the average weight of a 14-inch bike on the market. Of course, we apply this same principle of lightness to each of our models, so that your child gets the most out of their bike rides.

Why choose a lighter bike?

The more the child progresses in his learning, the more he becomes autonomous and evolves on new grounds, which are also frequented by other users. It is therefore important to provide him with a light, manageable and ergonomic bike so that he can move easily, avoiding obstacles. He will also be able to climb his first hills without difficulty, cover longer distances and enjoy them more, because a light bike requires less strength to move forward. A lighter bike also means more safety and fewer falls. If this happens, a featherweight bike hurts a lot less! The last advantage of a lighter bike is for you, parents, who will have less weight to support if you have to carry it during a ride… ;-)

What determines the weight of the bike?

Generally, a third of the bike's weight comes from the frame and fork. The rest of the weight comes in particular from the wheels, the handlebars, the saddle or even the transmission with the freewheel and the crankset. The weight of a bike depends mainly on the quality of the materials that make it up, and therefore on their price. The lighter the bike, the more its cost will increase. The materials usually used for the manufacture of children's bikes are steel or aluminum. Steel is a very present material on the market of children's bicycles. It is stiff, easy to work with, and inexpensive, allowing bikes to be offered at low prices. However, it is heavy and subject to corrosion. It is therefore better to favor aluminum, which is lighter, more comfortable and very robust. It is for this reason that at BEMOOV we only use high-end, ultra-light 6061 aluminium.

A little advice from BEMOOV by the way

Although it seems fun, we advise against multiplying the accessories, such as wicker baskets, flags or mermaids, for example. Placing too many accessories can indeed complicate starting and pedaling, alter the balance of the bike and distract the child. It is therefore better to add them later, when the child will be completely comfortable on his bike...
